LAUDERHILL, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida woman said her husband is recovering in the hospital after being shot outside his apartment.

The shooting happened just after midnight Wednesday at the Royal Palms apartment complex along Oakland Park Boulevard and Northwest 56th Avenue.

Janicia Melton said she was in the bathroom when her husband stepped outside for about 10 minutes and shots were fired. "I heard a big boom on the door and it was him and he just started screaming, 'Call 911,'" she said. "When I came out, I just saw him on the floor with a puddle of blood."

Rescued crews rushed the 23-year-old man to Broward General hospital. "When I got to the hospital, all he said was, 'I didn't do anything. I was standing outside and someone just started shooting. They shot one in the air and one out,'" said Melton. "That's the one that went into his chest."

Melton said her husband is expected to make a full recovery. "He's doing fine. It [bullet] went through to his arm so he's getting a little surgery," she said.

Police are now trying to determine a motive.

Melton said the neighborhood isn't safe but she never expected violence to hit this close to home. "I feel unsafe. I have kids, so now I don't know," she said.

If you have any information on this shooting, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
