Former Miami mayor hired as Doral city manger

DORAL, Fla. (AP) -- Former Miami Mayor Joe Carollo is the new city manager of nearby Doral.
The Miami Herald reports the five-member city council unanimously accepted Doral Mayor Luigi Boria's nomination of Carollo on Wednesday night.
Carollo, who hasn't held office since a failed reelection bid in 2001, replaces Merrett Stierheim. Stierheim was hired last month as the city's interim manager and abruptly resigned hours before Carollo was officially hired.
Stierheim, who was hired to lead the search for a new manager, told The Herald Wednesday night that he was not part of the selection process. He called Carollo's hiring "a terrible decision."
Carollo is expected to sign a contract Thursday morning. He will earn $144,000 a year, plus benefits, and oversee a staff of 277 workers.
