Police investigate dual ATM robberies
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (WSVN) -- Police are investigating two identical alleged robberies that took place Thursday morning. Both of them involved ATM machines, but only one of them was executed successfully.
Just before 4:15 a.m. Thursday morning, two cars rolled up to the Kwik Stop along Northwest 95th Street in Northwest Miami-Dade. Surveillance footage showed pulling out the metal awning and breaking a glass window.
One person then ducked inside and placed a yellow strap around the ATM. The strap was then attached to a chain, which was yanked right off the floor when a gold car parked outside pulled forward.
The thieves then carried the ATM outside the store and into the parking lot. They put the cash dispenser into the second vehicle, all while traffic passed on by, leaving behind twisted metal and broken glass.
According to the convenience store clerk Meer Hossain, the perpetrators left with thousands of dollars. "They're claiming about $6,000 dollars were in there," he said.
The alleged robbers continued their crime spree that very same hour. At about 4:40 a.m., Miami Police believe it is the same men in the same cars who pulled up to President Supermarket on Northeast 125th Street. Cameras captured the alleged robbers breaking a glass door and tying the same yellow strap around the supermarket's ATM.
The crooks tried to pull the ATM out with a chain attached to a car, but this time they were unable to dislodge it. One of the men then pulled back and smashed his body into the cash dispenser, hitting it several times with his right shoulder.
"He apparently hurt himself and walked away holding his shoulder," said North Miami Police Major Neil Cuevas. "This will probably end up in one of those dumbest videos [compilations]," he added.
Both stores remain open.
