FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Broward County officials plan to discuss, in the near future, a possible name change.

The idea of changing the name of Broward County to Fort Lauderdale County could be discussed by the Broward County commissioners in the future.

One advertising executive thinks there needs to be much more research into the potential name change. "Yesterday, I was invited to be a guest at the council, and there was no opinion by me on what they should or shouldn't do with a possible name change from Broward County," said Founder of Zimmerman Advertising Jordan Zimmerman. "We really have to go into the marketplaces, defeat our cities and talk to people, so that we can get real information back. Do they think Broward County is a true destination as a brand? What do you think of the brand or is Fort Lauderdale County a better name."

A name change would be a lengthy process, needing approval from the county commission, countywide voters and the state legislature.

There is precedent, however: In 1997, Miami-Dade voters approved a switch to Metro-Dade County to Miami-Dade County.
