PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. (WSVN) -- Governor Rick Scott is getting a new port project started in South Florida.

Governor Scott broke ground Thursday afternoon at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on a $13 million facelift for the shipping hub.

It will be the nation's first combined international and domestic cargo rail facility at a port.

Officials say the expansion will boost business opportunities and create thousands of jobs.

Governor Scott said, "This is over 2,000 permanent jobs and over 700 construction jobs, and in the long term, we'll have more and more jobs for Florida families. Remember, over 500,000 jobs in our state are directly and indirectly tied to our ports."

The plan also requires some highway adjustments. The raising of Interstate 595 began back in 2011 and will be completed by 2014, allowing those trains easy access in and out of the port.
