Local event celebrates scholarship foundation

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Community leaders in South Florida are helping students by honoring Dr. Martin Luther King.

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity scholarship breakfast at Jungle Island welcomed Senator Bill Nelson, where he and other volunteers will celebrate the work done by the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project Foundation.

"Look at all the young men that have been mentored that are now very responsible individuals in the community," said Nelson. "I think it's amazing on how successful this program has been."

The program has awarded millions in scholarships since its founding in 1993.
