Cab driver recovering after shot in attempted robbery

NORTH MIAMI (WSVN) -- A South Florida cab driver is recovering after he was shot during an attempted armed robbery in the driveway of his home.

"He's alive and in good spirits," said Rosette Jean, the victim's wife.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning on 145th Street and Northeast Seventh Court. Mirabelle Jean said her father had just finished his overnight shift when he was held up by an armed robber in his driveway. "He told me they knocked on his window with the gun, and when he saw the gun, he pulled off and they shot him," she said.

Sixty-eight-year-old Rabel Jean was pulling up to his driveway when someone approached his car. The suspect demanded Jean to get out of the vehicle. Jean then pressed the accelerator, went through some trees before crashing into the front of his neighbor's home.

Mirabelle heard her father's screams and rushed outside to find his car in the neighbor's front yard. Moments later, she found him in the backyard and he told her the ordeal. "He didn't attack, he didn't do anything but just drive off but they still shot him," she said. "So, if he would've got out that car, they would've killed him for no reason."

Jean had a bullet wound in his arm and suffered some head injuries because of the crash. He was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery. Doctors said he is expected to make a full recovery.

His family believes he was targeted because of his schedule and his profession. "I don't think it was one person, I think it's someone who knows his schedule and knows that he comes home early in the morning between three to five," said Mirabelle. "And they were waiting for him cause the car was there."

Jean and his wife are building a home in Haiti and plan to retire and return to the country in a month.
