MIAMI (WSVN) -- The Kiwanis Club, along with another local foundation and other sponsors, are helping to bridge the digital divide with some South Florida students.
The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana along with artist Pitbull's Imaginate Foundation are stepping up to get disadvantaged students logged on and be connected. "Phase one of this program is to bring the Internet to these children's house, because it's no longer a luxury, it's a necessity," said Kiwanis Club President Henry Jimenez.
"I think it's gonna help me a lot now," said student Janelle Vigo.
A digital access campaign is currently underway that will provide Internet service to 60 families of kids from six schools across Miami-Dade County.
Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the idea is to "eliminate the digital divide between those who have access and those who don't."
Vigo said this is going to help her get more practice for the FCAT. "To help me with the FCAT and to help me with my homework," she said.
The next phase for the digital access campaign is to put a technology center at Lummus Park, so the kids and others can get hands-on Internet training when they're not in school. "I can teach my little sister and I can do my homework better and faster," said Wannita Wright.
Better, faster online help, is now a reality thanks to these key sponsors delivering a digital shot in the arm for a deserving group.
