Cab robbery caught on camera

PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- Cameras were rolling as a robber targeted a cab driver on the job very early Friday.

The driver picked the man up from Plantation General Hospital and drove him to Northwest 13th Street and Seventh Court, at about 1:30 Friday morning.

Surveillance video captured the cab driver struggling with the passenger. The customer, who said he was armed, then robbed him and ran off with a phone, GPS and cash before sleeping away into the dark between some apartment buildings.

Yellow Cab recently installed surveillance cameras on board taxi cabs to capture robberies just like this in the act. Though cab robberies are nothing new and some have even ended with fatalities, this is the first time one of those crimes was caught on video. It even had clear audio. "I blow your ***-ing head off. I'll shoot you, I'll shoot you. Give me the money! Give me the money!" yelled the passenger, as he reached over to the driver and wrestled with him, as the driver tried to honk his horn.

Onondieu Demelus, the cab driver, recalled the scene. "I said, 'What you say? You're going to ***-in' shoot me?' I said, 'You don't have anything on you because I just came from picking you up at the hospital. You don't have a gun. They let you go out of the hospital with a gun?'"

If you recognize the man caught on camera in this robbery, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
