MIAMI (WSVN) -- An elderly man with a history in law enforcement was robbed at gunpoint and shot in the leg, Wednesday morning.

The alleged robber approached 82-year-old Danis George as he sat on a plastic chair in his front yard, on NE 69th Street off North Miami Avenue, and asked him for money. "I said, 'No, I don't have money.' He said, 'You don't have money?' I sad, 'No,'" George said.

The beggar's attention then shifted to the gold necklace George was wearing. '"He said, 'You don't have money? Give me the chain,'" George said.

That's when the alleged robber got physical. "He pushed the chair, and when I fall down, the man grabbed his gun and he shoots me in the leg and then he took the chain," George said.

The victim indicated he would have spoken with the alleged robber if he had known he was armed. But George, who was targeted for his jewelry, fought back. "All I heard [was], 'Pow!'" said an unidentified woman who lives in George's neighborhood and witnessed the incident. "All I hear [is] the fight outside, and [a man said], 'No, no, no! Give me it, give me it, give me the necklace,'" she continued.

The perpetrator yanked off George's chain, broke his watch, and sent a bullet through his leg. The alleged robber only got away with George's gold necklace.

George, a former Citizen on Patrol for the Miami Police Department, said he wasn't scared. "I'm not scared to die. If the gods don't kill me, nobody kills me," George said.
