BOCA RATON, Fla. (WSVN) -- A homeless man who brandished a knife against campus police at Florida Atlantic University has been hospitalized after, police said, an officer was forced to fire.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to FAU Police. The confrontation occurred on a roof of a building at the campus after the police officer responded to reports of an armed man on campus. Police said the man on the roof had a knife, and at some point, the officer responding felt threatened and was forced to fire. The injured suspect was transported to the hospital.

The FAU Police Department gave a news conference Friday morning and said the confrontation occurred on top of a research building on campus. Officers said there was no danger to the public, and they are calling the situation isolated and under control. The campus is not on lockdown.

This is the second gun scare on the FAU Boca campus in the last three months. In November, the campus was placed on lockdown when a gunman was reported wandering the campus. No one was harmed in that incident.
