2 dead after collision at busy intersection
MARGATE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police said two people are dead after an accident at a busy intersection.
The deadly collision happened Monday night, just after 9 p.m., near Rock Island Drive and Holiday Springs Boulevard. "There was a 2003 white Toyota Corolla making a left turn onto Holiday Springs Boulevard," said Margate Police Detective Lori Eller. "We had a 2004 Honda Odyssey traveling southbound on Rock Island Road. The Toyota Corolla turned in front of the Honda Odyssey. The van struck the Corolla."
Investigators said the impact killed two people riding in the Toyota Corolla, including an elderly woman who was ejected from the vehicle. "The sound of the crash and it looked like everything was just flying all over the place," said Sherry Goldfinger.
The noise of the collision prompted residents to come out of their homes and tend to the passengers. "We were over there trying to help the people in the car, and I turned around, and I realized the dead lady," said Johnathan Sehnell. "That kind of like scared me a little bit, so all I wanted to really do was help them."
Witnesses said they could not believe the horror of the scene. "It's just horrible," said Ryan Dinardo. "Even not knowing them, it's just an innocent lady. It's just horrible."
Rescue crews transported the remaining passengers in the Corolla and Odyssey to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Residents said the intersection where the deadly accident happened is problematic and numerous accidents occur in this area. "I think it's terrible, said Goldfinger. "I myself have nearly been hit quite a number of times."
Police have not released the identities of the victims in this crash, pending the notification of their family. However, those injured include a mother, her teenager and 6 and 7-year-old children, who were in the van.
