FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida man who, police said, escaped their custody before turning himself over to authorities has appeared in bond court.

Mark Vega made his appearance in court Wednesday morning. He stands accused of holding a woman hostage for several days and abusing her. Investigators said Vega turned himself in at Hollywood Police Headquarters on Tuesday.

According to police, Vega was originally arrested a few hours earlier outside a pediatrician's office for the domestic violence case. However, after police apprehended him, Vega somehow got out of the cruiser.

He now faces several charges, including felony battery, kidnapping and criminal mischief. He is being held without bond.
