Police searching for gunman who tried to rob maintenance worker

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (WSVN) -- Lauderhill Police are searching for a man who fired shots during an attempted robbery in Lauderhill, Thursday afternoon.
According to police, a man approached a maintenance worker while he was in his van. The man then allegedly pulled a gun and tried to snatch the maintenance worker's chain. The man failed to take the chain and ran away, but as he fled, he fired off a shot and fled westbound in the area.
Police set up a perimeter in the 2200 block of NW 59th Way to search for the suspect. Police officers also called K-9 units and police helicopters to assist in the search but turned up empty-handed.
The suspect is described as a heavy-set man with a dark complexion, standing about 5 feet 7 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a mask, no shirt and gray pants.
Royal Palm Elementary and Endeavor Primary Learning Center had to be put on lock down during the search for the suspect. Those lockdowns have since been lifted.
