1 dead, hundreds without power, following collision

PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man was killed Friday night when he crashed his car into a utility pole, depriving hundreds of South Florida homes of electricity.

Rescue crews arrived on the scene of the single car accident at University Drive and Northwest 5th Street in Plantation. The driver's vehicle took down several power lines when it hit the pole. Florida Power and Light technicians were called out to the scene and shut down power in the area.

According to FPL, there are 260 customers without power in the area, but electricity should be restored soon.

Officials said there were possibly two dogs in the vehicle, but their fate is still unknown. Plantation Police are investigating.
