HOMESTEAD, Fla. (WSVN) -- A pregnant cow was freed after being trapped in a drainage ditch.

Crews tried to rescue the animal, bringing in equipment to lift it to safety.

The cow's owner noticed her missing and started searching for her. When he found her, he knew he would need help from the pros to free her. "She is pregnant and might be birthed soon, so I called fire rescue," said owner Miguel Hernandez

Rescuers said the animal got out of its containment area before falling five feet into the ditch along Southwest 283rd Street and Texas Avenue.

Rescuers and the owner tried to keep her calm. "Anytime you have an animal that size," said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Aarom Marks, "there's always a danger. In case the animal panics, we keep minimal personnel in there just in case the animal does react stressfully to the situation."

A vet was standing by as a precaution, but he believed the animal will be just fine.

The cow is expected to give birth in the next few days.
