HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A few animals are getting a new leash on life.

Miami-Dade Animal Services sent 25 dogs and six cats from Comfort Kennels in Hialeah to a no-kill shelter in Iowa, where they will find the animals new homes.

Shelter officials said many pets are adopted locally and some are taken by rescue agencies, but there are just too many animals in need of a family. "We get 30,000 pets per year or more," said Melissa Sorokin. "So one of the programs that we have that has been innovative is to ship them up north where there's excellent quality adopters."

They expect to send six more dogs to shelters in the northeast this weekend.
