12 locals win close to $1M in Powerball drawing
PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- A group of co-workers, including three family members won a major jackpot.
The group was in the office on a Sunday, and they never seemed happier. The group of co-workers got together to celebrate at their Plantation real estate workplace and there's a million reasons why. The numbers 17, 29, 31, 52, 53; in the Powerball sweepstakes that's a million bucks. "This is awesome," said Laurie Finkelstein-Reader. "We are so thrilled. Thank you, universe!"
Laurie Finkelstein-Reader bought the tickets at a Pembroke Pines gas station. Twelve co-workers each chipped in $20, creating 240 chances at fortune. "I text messaged my co-worker and realized that we had won."
It's one of just 13 tickets nationwide to get the 5 for 5 million-dollar prize. A ticket purchased in New Jersey hit the $338 million Powerball, but they aren't complaining. "I thought it was going to be $100," said one of the ladies, "then, I thought, 'This might be a big deal.'"
7News' legal expert Howard Finkelstein is also not complaining. His mother, sister and daughter were part of the group of 12 who won.
Saria Finkelstein already knows where the money will go. "I am going to become a homeowner," she said. "I'm going to buy my own house."
Each winner took home a little more than $83,000.
