2 children in critical condition after house fire
CUTLER BAY, Fla. (WSVN) -- Two small children, who were allegedly left unattended at home, remain hospitalized, Thursday after a fire broke out in their bedroom.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a house fire in Cutler Bay on the 100th block of Martinique Drive, Wednesday. When they arrived, fire rescue found two small children inside the house, a 4-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl.
Fire rescue pulled the children out of the home, gave them CPR and airlifted them to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police say the young girl suffered severe smoke inhalation injuries. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Arnold Piedrahita said, "It seems like they were overcome with smoke, they were unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing. Fire rescue crews worked these kids feverishly and were able to regain a pulse and a blood pressure."
Thursday morning, both children remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Miami-Dade Police officers were also called to the scene because the children were home alone when fire rescue arrived. According to detectives, the children's biological mother was at work when the fire broke out, and the two children were supposed to be under the supervision of a caretaker.
Miami-Dade Police Officer Roy Rutland said, "I don't think you need to be a detective to look at the scene behind me and realize we have two small children left alone and realize that it is a concern. I think to say, 'It's a concern' is an understatement."
Police arrested babysitter, 31-year-old Andrew Sepulveda. He has been charged with two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm. He faced a judge in court, Thursday where his bond was set at $25,000.
Police said Sepulveda lives in the same home with the two children and their mother.
The children's uncle Moreese Morse said the mother does pay for a babysitter. "These things happen I understand that. I just hope they are OK. I can just pray and hope they are OK."
