Police arrest man barricaded inside apartment
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are investigating why a man fired several shots outside his apartment and then barricaded himself inside, early Thursday morning.
Police said they got a call from a witness who saw the man firing shots outside an apartment building on Northwest 28th Avenue and Pierce Street, just before 6 a.m.
The entire apartment building, which houses about 120 people, was evacuated. "I opened the door, and they're like, 'Get out,' and I'm like, 'I'm in my pajamas. Can I get clothes at least?'" said Pamela Hardin.
SWAT teams were called in to assist officers. The man, who has been identified by police as 30-year-old Nelson Tomattis, was eventually taken into custody. SWAT needed to use gas and distraction devices to drive the man out of the apartment
Police said Tomattis has 29 previous arrests for violent crimes and is wanted for drug charges in another county.
Tomattis was arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling. It remains unclear why he started shooting.
