Lost airport merchandise to be sold at local Goodwill stores
ALLAPATTAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Stacks of lost luggage at Miami International Airport will no longer be auctioned off. They are now headed for the store racks where you could find some big bargains.
A storage room in the Goodwill store in Little Havana might seem a little deceiving at first glance. It probably looks like TSA's lost and found.
They purchased over 800 suitcases that were at TSA's lost and found and plan to open each and every one of them, process it, and then sell it on the floor.
All of the money made will go back into making the community a better place. "About two days ago, we were able to send the Goodwill trucks to the lost and found of the airport," said Lourdes De la Mata-Little, "and we were able to receive two truckloads and spent two days of bringing the luggage over. Goodwill is getting all of the stuff that was left behind, and no, it's not just suitcases. There's lot of boxes, a lot of loose items, belts, sunglasses, accessories."
"This is a brand new men's two-piece suit," said a Goodwill employee.
What exactly is this loot offering up? We have the basics, like clothes, pajamas, shoes and socks, and the baby strollers, which we all know can be fairly expensive. There are also walkers and crutches and even name-brand items like Gucci, Yves St. Laurent, Louis Vuitton sunglasses and belts.
"This is part of a process that helps the community," said De la Mata-Little. "What we do is we process the items and put them in the stores, but with the proceeds of all the sales that we get, not only from the luggage but the community who so graciously donates their things to us, we're able to sell in our store and use that money to further train people with disabilities and place them in community jobs."
"It's a good company to work for," said Dina Hall. "I am very pleased. I am very happy."
All the bags will be searched and processed. The items will be tagged, and then everything, including the suitcases, will go out to store floors and will all be for sale.
Every month or so Goodwill will get bags from TSA, but the merchandise will only be sold at the Goodwill stores in Allapattah and Little Havana.
