FAU faculty senate opposes stadium name change
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- The Faculty Senate at Florida Atlantic University opposes a $6 million to change the name of its football stadium to that of a private prison corporation accused of human rights violations.
The Palm Beach Post reports FAU's student government is expected to vote later this week on a similar resolution.
Under an agreement announced in February, the Palm Beach County-based university announced it would rename the stadium to GEO Group Stadium. Students and South Florida pro-immigrant activists expressed outrage, saying some facilities operated by the group have come under fire for human rights violations.
Faculty Senate President William McDaniel says the resolution is "purely advisory." But he says his colleagues feel strongly about the issue and hope the university's president will follow suit.
GEO's chairman is an FAU alumnus.
