Search continues for missing diver
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Coast Guard crews continue a desperate search for a missing diver in Key Biscayne.
Monday morning, at sunrise, crews returned to sea to resume their search for the diver who went missing over the weekend.
The Coast Guard is leading a search for the 39-year-old man, who they said went missing off a diving boat at about 12:30 p.m., Sunday afternoon. Investigators said he was somehow separated from a group of friends. Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said, "He apparently missed the lifeline, the current was a little strong and pulled him away a little bit, and as the friends attempted to move the boat to get to him, it was only within minutes that they lost sight of him."
Sunday afternoon, the Coast Guard swarmed the waters and their helicopters hovered around the coast from Haulover Beach to Key Biscayne.
Miami-Dade Police Marine Patrol officers are also assisting in the search and rescue mission. "We're still remaining hopeful. We're keeping our fingers crossed. We're still praying that the current may have taken him, and we're able to find him now that it is daylight," said Zabaleta.
Another boater went missing Sunday after a 23-foot boat he was on board capsized. Tragically, he did not survive.
However, authorities remain hopeful that this missing diver is still alive. "He's an experienced diver, so we're hoping that because of that part of the whole training to become a diver is the survival and how-to if you encounter problems," said Zabaleta. "We're holding on to that, and the waters were pretty warm last night, so there are a lot of factors that are in his favor."
Miami-Dade Police said they spoke to the four people on the boat last night, and they said the boaters did everything they could, and they did follow protocol.
