Fatal collision closes bridge in Miami Beach
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The 79th Street Causeway westbound from Miami Beach had to be closed due to a crash that ended in tragedy for a family, early Tuesday afternoon.
The violent crash between a rental van and a sedan occurred at around 12:15 p.m., in the 71st Street to 79th Street connector before the westbound entrance of the bridge, toward the mainland from Normandy Isle.
Miami Beach Police and Miami Beach Fire Rescue responded to the accident. According to Miami Beach Police, a car with three occupants had stopped at the drawbridge signal, which was red. A U-Haul Rental Van was attempting to go over the bridge, and the driver swerved and struck the car in the rear. The car held a family of three, including a son, father and mother.
The son and father were sitting in the front seat and the mother was in the back; she was pronounced dead at the scene. The father and son were transported to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami in unknown condition.
The driver of the U-Haul was transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and is expected to be OK.
Traffic had to be turned around to travel north or south to enter the city, as the road had to be blocked for rescue crews to perform their work. The eastbound lanes, however, remained open.
The investigation continues and charges remain pending.
