Official reinstates firefighter's rank after comments
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Miami-Dade firefighter who was demoted after some controversial comments will get his rank reinstated.
On Monday Brian Beckmann will be reinstated to the rank of captain.
Beckmann was disciplined last year after he posted a rant on his personal Facbook page, bashing the prosecutor who charged George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. He also used racially charged language towards African American parents and teens.
Beckmann filed a grievance and a county arbitrator sided with him.
However, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez expressed his disappointment in the arbitrator's decision stating: "We must always hold our county employees to a higher standard, and given the offensive and inflammatory remarks made by Mr. Beckmann, a quick slap on the wrist just isn't good enough."
Beckmann will now receive all wages and benefits lost as a result of the demotion.
