1 dead, 1 injured in shooting
OPA-LOCKA, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and put another in the hospital. Police have arrested one man, and an officer suffered a minor injury to his ankle or foot.
Opa-Locka Police have not confirmed how the shooting, the arrest and the injured officer are all related to each other. All they have confirmed is that an argument started just outside the Food Truck Customizing business near Northwest 139th Street and 22nd Avenue, just before noon, Thursday.
It all began with reports of shots fired during a dispute that left one man dead. Another man was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a third was taken to jail. Neither the chief nor the city manager would elaborate on the arrested man's involvement.
Opa-Locka Assistant City Manager David Chiverton said "Apparently there was a confrontation here, across the street. Subjects had words, a weapon was produced, not sure yet if both parties produced the weapon."
Police said the shooter took off on foot and went to a nearby canal, where police finally caught up with him. During the pursuit, the officer injured his foot or ankle.
Chiverton said, "We are saddened that someone lost their life as a result of this accident, but what we're proud of is our police department's approach to apprehend the suspect to get an investigation in the process immediately and pretty much determine how this came to be."
The officer who suffered an injury to his foot or ankle was transported to Memorial West in Miramar and is expected to be OK.
Miami-Dade County Police dive teams have been called to the scene to assist in the recovery of a weapon, as they believe it may have been thrown in the canal.
