3 detained, 3 injured following apartment shooting
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have detained three men for their alleged involvement in a shooting at a South Florida apartment that sent three people to the hospital Saturday afternoon.
Broward Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene of the triple shooting in the Whispering Palms apartment complex, located on the 4500 block of Northwest 36th Street in Lauderdale Lakes. A cell phone video shot by a 7News viewer shows BSO deputies trying to stop the bleeding of a victim left shot and collapsed on a balcony.
According to witnesses, neighbors swarmed the parking lot in front of the second floor unit where the shooting took place. "People running everywhere, and there's kids out here, that's the worst part about it," said resident Pedro Nicholas Souffrant. "It's daytime. Those guys couldn't even wait to commit the crime at night."
Witnesses said they started hearing gunshots around 4 p.m. "They just tell everyone, 'Stay inside, don't come outside,'" said a woman.
People were crowded under balconies overlooking the parking lot where they said the gunfight spilled out. "They just carried on, I want to say four or five shots," said Souffrant.
BSO deputies came in fully armed. They said three people were shot and another took off on foot. One of the victims walked away bleeding from the leg, as rescuers carefully carried someone laid out on a stretcher down the stairs and wheeled him into an ambulance.
Two of the victims, a 25-year-old man and his 50-year-old father, were transported to Broward Health Medical Center, the younger man by air in critical condition and his father by ground with non life-threatening injuries. The third victim was dropped off at Florida Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
At the scene of the crime, deputies taped it off and locked everything down, before towing a 2-door sports car, possibly related, from the complex.
Investigators said the shooting is the result of an ongoing argument between the three men who were shot. Authorities detained the person who arrived at Florida Medical Center along with two other men as they continue to interview witnesses to piece together the incident.
