Woman who stole car with children heads to court
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A woman accused of stealing a car with three young children inside made her first court appearance on Tuesday morning.
"I didn't touch nobody's child," said Velan Verdier.
Verdier appeared before a judge Tuesday morning where she learned she will not be issued bond on three charges of kidnapping connected to accusations that she stole a car with three small kids, one of who she stole $5 from.
Little Kalia Milhomme, who was inside the car when Verdier allegedly drove off with it said, "The lady got in the car, that's when she drove off, that's when she said, 'Give me the $5.'" When asked what she did, Milhomme said, "I gave it to her."
Investigators said, Anthony Milhomme Sr. left his kids, 5-year-old Anthony Milhomme Jr., 6-year-old Kalia Milhomme and their 6-year-old cousin, Isaiah Paul in a running car to head into a convenience store. Then Verdier jumped in and drove away with the car while the children were still inside.
Police found the stolen vehicle just four blocks away, at Northwest 58th Street, between First and Second Avenue.
Sharonda Scott, the mother of two of the children is glad to have her kids safe and sound. "I'm so excited. I just wanna get in a bed and cuddle with my babies because I didn't think I was gonna do it tonight, and I'm never, ever going to let them out of my sight," said Scott.
For four hours, the children's family had no idea where the children were. Isaiah's father was thinking the worst. "In these times it will drive you crazy," said Spartacus Paul. "It just showed me how important my kids are to me."
Police also arrested Milhomme Sr., the father of two of the children, faces charges of three counts of child neglect and one count of obstruction because, police said, he was actually inside the store for longer than he originally had told investigators. "Even when I got into the jailhouse facility they were telling me, 'You seem like a good dad. Mistakes happen. We all do it,'" said Milhomme Sr.
Milhomme bonded out of jail early Tuesday morning.
Verdier faces charges of kidnapping, child abuse, false imprisonment, robbery and grand theft. Her her court date is set for May 20.
