Man in critical condition after falling in manhole
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Rescue crews saved a Good Samaritan after he tried to get a woman's keys from a storm drain and got swept away.
Miami Beach Police and Fire Rescue responded to the incident at 74th Street and Ocean Terrace in Miami Beach after the man believed to be in his 50s nearly drowned trying to locate a set of keys belonging to a woman, according to witnesses.
Police believe the man removed the lid from the storm drain and went down twice before never coming back up. "It's crazy," said a woman. "We are really surprised because there were three of them, the other two are there, but we don't know what happened to him."
"He took the lid off and went inside," said Juan Lara, "he was halfway in and was sucked in. The drainage sucked him in and he was under approximately 15 minutes."
When Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, they could not remove the manhole cover. After using a pole and working feverishly, they were finally able to remove the cover and pull the man out.
Rescue crews were able to resuscitate him before transporting him to the hospital.
"It was horrible," said a man. "They started giving him CPR on the ground, and you figure maybe the guy isn't gonna make it."
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and remains in critical condition.
