Woman charged with kidnapping, stealing car
MIAMI (AP) -- A South Florida woman remained in jail Tuesday after she drove off in a running car that had three children inside, authorities said.
Anthony Milhomme, 34, left his car running outside a Little Haiti shop Monday afternoon, Miami police reported. Inside the car were his son and daughter -- 5-year-old Anthony Milhomme and 6-year-old Kaila Milhomme -- and his nephew -- 6-year-old Isaiah Paul.
Velan Verdier, 33, hopped in the car and drove off, police said. She reportedly demanded $5 from the children, who gave it to her. The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/18m94Rh ) reports that Verdier was pulled over about two hours later with the children still in the car. They were returned to their mothers, who had been waiting back at the store.
Verdier is facing one count each of grand theft auto and robbery by sudden snatching and three counts each of kidnapping, child abuse and false imprisonment. She was being held without bail. The Miami Beach woman has a long arrest record dating to 1999 in Miami-Dade that includes more than a dozen felony and/or misdemeanor arrests for disorderly conduct, battery, resisting arrest, drug and paraphernalia possession, trespassing, criminal mischief, auto theft, disorderly intoxication and "deadly missile throwing."
The elder Milhomme has been charged with three counts of child neglect and one count of obstruction, for reportedly telling police he'd only been in the store for two minutes when he had actually been inside for 15. He was released on bail.
