Family horse slaughtered and butchered for meat
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (WSVN) -- Police and a horse owner are trying to figure out who slaughtered a mare on a ranch in Northwest Miami-Dade.
Horse owner Raquel Torres believes at least one person, maybe two, led the female horse, named Destiny, out of its stall Tuesday night, chained the animal to the back of the barn, off Northwest 137th Avenue, slaughtered it and took its meat.
The family has been left heartbroken and looking for answers. "What people don't understand is that we have had this horse for seven years. Seven years for some people is nothing, but to us it's a lifetime," said Torres. "This is just not an animal. This is a family member. Everybody would ride her, bathe her, brush her and everything else like that."
Torres said her nephew discovered the slaughtered horse on Wednesday morning when he went outside to do his usual morning chores. "When he came up to her, and he saw this, he started screaming," she said.
Richard Couto with the Animal Recovery Mission is fighting to prevent stories like Destiny's. "Anyone who breaks into a property in the middle of the night and butchers a pet horse alive, is no one that I want as a neighbor," said Couto.
Couto said the slaughtering of horses is a common crime across the state of Florida with most cases ending without an arrest.
According to Couto, in South Florida, between Miami-Dade County and Broward County, more then 50 cases have been opened up in the last year. "They usually butcher alive and they start harvesting the meat while the animal is still breathing," said Couto.
Destiny's 3-year-old offspring, named Lucero, was several feet away when his mother was killed.
The family remember Destiny as an active, playful horse. "There is no reason to kill a horse for horse meat," said Torres.
No arrests has been made in this case. If you have any information on this horse slaughter, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
