SUV crashes into gas station store, no injuries
NORTH BAY VILLAGE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A woman attempting to park her sport utility vehicle at a Hess Express gas station lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the store, making this the second time a runaway car has hit this location in five months.
The driver said her accelerator on her white Hyundai SUV got stuck around 7 p.m. Wednesday. She ended hopping the curb with all four tires and shattering the glass, breaking cases of beer on the other side.
Store employees at the location at 1508 79th Street Causeway had cleaned up most of the mess and removed the shattered glass by Wednesday night, although, off to a corner, there were still broken beer cartons, and the floor was still sticky.
Customers find it hard to believe this situation has occurred again. "It's so strange that it's the same store twice, just on the opposite end of the building," said James French, pointing at the missing glass window. "The same store twice? It's crazy."
On Jan. 3, a white BMW barreled into the store near the cashier area, nearly hitting a woman, her husband and young daughter. "We thought it was a bomb at first," said Stephanie DeMarco, at the time of that collision. "My husband was screaming at me to grab [my daughter], and for a split second I lost her."
The driver in that case said the mat on the floor got stuck and the car flew through the glass. The driver of Wednesday night's incident had a similar story. Her family said something went wrong with her accelerator, causing the car to lurch forward.
"I'm just trying to pay for my gas, and I didn't even notice," said customer Vadim Kozarin. "I thought it was a decoration, and now all that broken glass, my God."
The woman was alert and appeared to be shaken up by the incident. North Bay Village Police arrived on the scene and issued her a ticket for failure to use due care.
The store, which includes a Quiznos and Dunkin' Donuts, has since reopened for business. Now, perhaps there's a new model store officials would like to consider. "I guess it's something like a drive-thru," quipped Kozarin.
