Family of deceased plastic surgery patient demands answers
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A family is demanding an explanation from the doctor who claims he acted according to procedure even though their loved one died one day after undergoing plastic surgery.
"I miss her a lot ... how she takes care of me," said Kevin Stuwer, the 7-year-old son of Adriana DeSilva, who passed away from complications after having several cosmetic procedures at a Boca Raton facility.
"She received, on April 5, which was a Friday, a breast augmentation, a breast lift, an extended tummy tuck and a neck liposuction, all which were done at the same time," said family attorney Dan Harwin. "She was under anesthesia for nearly six hours and was only kept at the facility for an hour and a half after the procedure."
DeSilva's 14-year-old daughter said her mother was very excited to have the surgery. "I was happy for her," said Kerolayne Stuwer. "It was something she wanted to do. It was a present that she was going to give herself, for her birthday and for Mother's Day."
Harwin chronicled what happened after his client's surgery. "The following day she started to have very serious complications," he said. "It's our understanding, at this time, she had some type of stroke. She was on life support, and eventually was taken off."
The medical examiner had not released a cause of death on Thursday evening. DeSilva's family has not filed a lawsuit at this time.
Dr. Daniel Zeichner, the surgeon who operated on DeSilva, said he feels terrible for the family but added that some people have complications after surgery. "Multiple procedures are done quite frequently, and that amount of time she was under anesthesia is not uncommon," he said in a statement. "I did not have a problem during surgery, and she was discharged according to the guidelines the Center follows, under rules administered by the State of Florida."
Zeichner's statement offers Kerolayne little consolation for her loss. "It's been hard," she said. "She's gone. She took, like, a part of me, but I have to be strong for my brother and to be there when he needs me."
