Construction begins for the new Miami-Dade Ikea
SWEETWATER. Fla. (WSVN) -- Crews broke ground and are making room for the future Ikea in Sweetwater.
"So it's about time we finally made it to Miami-Dade County!" said Ikea official Joseph Roth.
The ground breaking for the 416,000 square-foot store took place Tuesday morning. It is expected to open in the Summer of 2014.
The new Ikea sits adjacent to Dolphin Mall and west of Miami International Airport, near the intersection of the Dolphin Expressway and the Florida Turnpike.
Ikea officials said the new store and their Swedish food market will be built on a second level, above the parking garage, with many of the features Ikea shoppers now expect.
The Sweetwater location will be Florida's fourth store and the biggest, leaving the Mayor of Sweetwater very pleased. "We've asked Ikea to consider our residents first for jobs, and they've agreed to do that," said Mayor Manny Maroño.
The company plans to employ 350 people at their Miami-Dade County location. "We look forward to hire from the local community, to becoming a partner here, right in Sweetwater," said Michael Maier of Ikea.
Ikea is the world's leading home furnishings retailer. The new Miami-Dade County store will have three model home interiors, a children's play area and a 600-seat restaurant. "The store is going to have a showroom of approximately 50 fully-decorated room settings," said Maier.
