Fate still unknown for "Real Housewives" mansion
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- More house woes for a Real Housewife of Miami and her plastic surgeon husband trying to demolish and rebuild their Star Island dream home.
It is glitz and glamour galore at 42 Star Island Drive. The Star Island mansion is once again the focal point in the last place you may expect to find it: at City Hall.
Miami Beach preservationists won a small battle Wednesday night in the fight over the mansion's future. They want it deemed historic, but the owner, Dr. Leonard Hochstein, wants to knock the whole thing down.
After a two and a half hour hearing, Miami Beach city commissioners shot down a resolution to not designate the home as historic, meaning the process of what or what not to deem the house will continue.
Bravo viewers know it from show "the Real Housewives of Miami." Dr. Hochstein and his wife Lisa are one of the celebrity couples on the show.
The preservationists showed up by the dozens. "There is no question that the property is of historic and architectural value," said one preservationist.
This isn't just any South Beach mansion. The home is valued at $9.1 million and was built in 1920, according to the real estate website zillow.com.
The Hochsteins want to demolish the home and build on the land anew. They said, as the homeowners, it's their right.
Reporter: "You live in a beautiful home. I don't think there are many people that feel bad for you, but do you feel picked on?"
Hochstein: "I am picked on. Everything that has happened today has not happened in the history of Miami Beach."
Dr. Hochstein said he has followed every law, code and rule and has pleaded for the door to finally be shut. "I'm just tired of being punished for following the rules," said Hochstein, "and doing every single thing that every citizen of Miami Beach has had the right to do up until now."
But 42 Star Island lives for now. More meetings will follow. There will probably be several board meetings before a final vote takes place.
