Teen dragged, run over by county bus
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Broward Sheriff's Office said a 14-year-old boy trying to catch a Broward County transit bus so he can get to school was run over by that bus.
BSO deputies said the middle school student was running to catch the bus near 1199 E. Sample Rd., at around 9 a.m. Friday. A witness fought back tears as he described what happened next. "I was sitting on the front seat of the bus. I saw his hand," said Brian Clark. "The door was completely closed from his elbow to his hand. The door was open when the child tried to get on the bus, and he [the bus driver] started to pull off and he closed the door and from here to here [elbow to hand] was inside the bus, that's all I saw. The next thing I see is the child drop and felt the thump."
The student was taken to Chris Evert Children's Hospital after it took paramedics 40 minutes to stabilize him. He is listed in extremely critical condition.
Clark called 911. Broward Sheriff's Office spokesperson Dani Moschella said, "Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported him to Broward Health North and BSO's rescue unit transported him to Broward Health Medical Center."
Clark said he and all the passengers on board the bus tried to notify the bus driver to stop. "For this bus driver to not listen to the passengers screaming, everybody on the bus screaming, 'Stop,' and he just ignored us?" said Clark. "And then he said, 'Oh, I didn't see him.' How do you not see a hand and everybody screaming at you to stop?"
Nearby surveillance cameras captured the moments before the tragic accident. The boy was seen running to the bus and his mother running right behind him. "His mother saw everything," said Clark. "There's blood coming out his ears, his mouth his nose. I have a son who is a year younger than him."
The county bus was eventually moved from the scene.
The bus driver, later identified as Reinaldo Soto, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
