Family escapes boat fire; no injuries
NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- A family scrambled to safety moments before a boat blast brought their peaceful night on the water to a screeching halt.
Five people and two dogs were on board the boat near Bay Harbor Island including grandparents and a 17-month-old baby when the boat caught fire.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene overnight. They said everyone on board was asleep at the time of the fire.
The family said they started smelling smoke and fortunately a smoke alarm went off. They believe it was the alarm that likely saved their lives. "That's why you've got to keep those alarms on and working all the time," said Varela.
The family had a dingy attached to the back of the boat and were able to escape without injuries. "We got onto the island and that was it," said Raul Varela. "Right after the fire got intense and boom. A little explosion and then like two or three more explosions happened. That was it."
The boat was very badly damaged. It was towed to Haulover Beach Marina.
The family said they were too traumatized to talk about their experience but are glad to be alive.
The boat fire is still under investigation. Detectives are trying to figure out what may have started the fire in the first place.
