MDPD officer honored by President Obama
WASHINGTON D.C. (WSVN) -- A Miami-Dade police detective shot three times in the line of duty was among 43 officers receiving the top cops award from the National Association of Police Organizations.
The awards were presented by President Obama Saturday. "We know that when we need you most you'll be ready to dash in to danger to protect our lives even if it means putting your lives on the line," said Obama.
Detective John Saavedra was recognized for his heroic efforts displayed during a wild shootout outside a Miami-Dade marijuana grow house back in July 2012.
On Wednesday, Saavedra is expected to join other undercover officers testifying in a special bond hearing for Luis Estevanell. He's the surviving suspect in the shootout. Estevanell faces drug possession, drug trafficking and felony murder charges.
