Mother and son share life-changing Mother's Day
TAMPA, Fla. (WSVN) -- It was an extra-special Mother's Day for one Florida family when a young mother found out she was the perfect match for her son and was able to give him the gift of life.
Evan Ranieri looks and acts like an average toddler. "You wouldn't know looking at him that there's anything wrong with him from the outside," said Melissa Ranieri.
But this 2-year-old has been fighting since the day he was born. His kidneys are underdeveloped.
Countless hours are spent hooked up to a dialysis machine. The hospital is his second home. "It's really difficult," said Ranieri. "The first couple of times, you can't really put it into words. But we've grown accustomed to this."
But this Mother's Day, Evan's mom Melissa is getting a gift by giving. She just found out she's an organ donor match for her son. "It was a lot of emotions," she said.
Evan's dad said the kidney transplant will give his son a chance at a normal life most of us take for granted. "I think it's unbelievable, the fact that we'll be able to go swimming," said Paul Ranieri. "That's something like that. He can't get wet. Stuff like that is just awesome."
In the meantime, the family is counting down the days until a life free of cords and catheters. It's all thanks to a trait moms are honored for each Mother's Day: selflessness. "You want to go parade in the streets, but you know, it's hard to quantify what she's doing for him," said Paul, "Or put down in writing or wrap up and give. It's amazing. The sacrifice she's doing for him. It's rare that a parent can give life to a child twice."
It's a gift that will heal a child's body and a mother's heart.
Evan's transplant surgery is scheduled for later this month.
