Mayoral candidate claims Jesus endorses campaign

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- Lashing back at what she contends was a voodoo attack, a South Florida mayoral candidate claims she has received divine assistance in the form of a political endorsement by Jesus Christ.
Anna Pierre, one of seven candidates vying for North Miami's mayoral seat on Tuesday's municipal elections, is confident about her campaign. "Today is May 14, and the community knows who they're going to vote for," she said. "I've been there. I've been on the battlefield."
The polls for the North Miami mayoral election opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday. They are scheduled to close at 7 p.m.
On Monday, she was out in the field stumping for votes in several languages. Unlike her opponents, Pierre handed out flyers with the words, "Endorsed by Jesus Christ" in big, bold blue and red letters along with an illustration of the religious figure on the right-hand side of the handout.
When asked if the endorsement is a little much, Pierre replied, "How could it be much when you have Jesus in your life?"
Pierre, a 54-year-old nurse, runs a health clinic in North Miami and is running on a platform of free health care and job creation.
The candidate said she knew she had to make Jesus Christ a part of her campaign when chicken feathers and candles were left outside of her office. She said she's convinced it's part of a voodoo curse. "From the moment I applied, people started to give me problems," Pierre said. "I received death threats, intimidations, trying to ask me to leave the race."
Reaction among potential voters has been mixed. "Really? I don't like it," said a woman outside a North Miami supermarket.
"If she says she's endorsed by Jesus Christ, it's her belief," said a man, also outside the supermarket.
It will be up to the voters to decide who will emerge victorious in this race, but Pierre said she's certain about the outcome. "You're talking to the winner, right here," she said.
