Father accused of child abuse speaks out
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida man facing child abuse charges is speaking out after allegedly tying his son to a pole.
Adolfo Guzman bonded out of jail Monday night. Guzman claims he was trying to teach his son a lesson after he went to a friend's house Saturday night without telling him.
The 12-year-old boy actually blamed himself for his dad's actions. "It's all my fault because I'm the one who got out of the house without permission," said the 12-year-old boy.
After bonding out of jail, Guzman told reporters that he told his son not to leave the house without telling anyone where he was going. "When I woke up at 10 a.m. he wasn't there, and I was crazy looking for him," he said through a translator.
The boy's sister supports her dad and said that he is a fair man. "My dad, he lets us go out, but my brother didn't tell him. That's why my dad got mad and did that," said the girl.
Jehovah's Witnesses spotted the boy tied to a pole and called police. "I tied it, but it wasn't too tight and there was a way he could free himself," said Guzman, through a translator. "I even told his little sister, 'Let him stay there for a couple of minutes after I leave and then just help him out.'"
However, Miami Beach Police said, Guzman's form of punishment is far from legal. "It is inhumane to tie even a dog up to a pole like that," said Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez. "This is his son. It's unbelievable, it's horrific and it's illegal.
The 49-year-old single father faces aggravated child abuse charges. He raises two children while on disability and is apologetic for his actions. "I don't want to leave this country, and if something happens to a kid or my kid, I could get in trouble and I'm very sorry I did that."
Guzman's son remains remorseful. "It's all my fault; it's not his fault," said the boy.
It is unclear where Guzman will go. He has been ordered by a judge not to contact his son. His children are currently in the care of their older sister.
