$625K worth of gold disappears from cargo plane
MIAMI (WSVN) -- An American Airlines jet landed at Miami International Airport from South America. Precious cargo was unloaded and moments later, it was gone.
The crime occurred in the early morning hours on Tuesday after the American's Airlines flight arrived at MIA carrying valuable cargo.
The airplane contained about $625,000 worth of gold and according to an airline spokeswoman, it was carried in a single box.
The regular flight from Guayaquil, Equador arrived in Miami and pulled into Gate D3. According to the Miami-Dade County police report, it was then removed from the bulk cargo area.
The police report said five cargo workers unloaded the cargo at around 5:15 a.m. Documents state, "It is unknown who drove the property around to the other side of the plane and left the property there."
The report continues to say, "A tug from Gate D6 pulled up and stopped at the cart. The tug then leaves and then continues onto D37 and then to the alley."
At that point, the tug is moved out of range of the surveillance cameras.
The questions remain as to who knew the gold was on board the flight and who took it?
The FBI is still investigating.
