Woman dies in tragic bus accident
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A fatal accident occurred at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after a woman was struck by a charter bus. Police said she tripped and fell to her death while getting into her vehicle.
Yellow crime scene tape blocked off all four lanes of traffic on Terminal 4 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after a woman was struck and killed by a charter bus, Saturday afternoon.
"She went to greet a passenger that was arriving there," said Mike Jachles, "and as she was getting back into the vehicle it appears that she tripped and fell under the wheels of the bus and she was struck."
The woman was the passenger in a Ford SUV parked in a traffic lane instead of a drop-off lane, closest to the terminal. "The bus was a private charter bus," said Jachles. "It was going to Miami with cruise passengers. There were approximately 12 passengers on board plus the driver. None of the people on the bus were injured."
After the woman was hit, she died on the scene. The Broward Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is investigating the crash. "The victim who was struck by the bus was the passenger of the car in the rear seat," said Jachles. "There were two other people in the vehicle, including a male driver and female front seat passenger."
The aftermath left people at the airport shaken. "It's shocking when you're trying to get here and the traffic is horrible, we had to detour, and parking was difficult," said Angela Santiago.
The scene has since been cleared so all traffic can drive through.
Police have identified the victim as 68-year-old Cheryl A. Bazilius of Fort Pierce.
Charges are still pending.
