New clues after toddler struck by hit-and-run driver
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Days after a toddler was struck by a hit-and-run driver in front of his South Florida home, police have new clues that may help them find the driver responsible.
Fort Lauderdale Police are calling a surveillance picture they have acquired a critical clue as they try to figure out who was the driver of a red Volkswagen Beetle that struck a boy and took off.
Twenty-month-old Isaac Cruz was hit in front of his home, located along the 5200 Block of Northeast 18th Avenue, on May 14. The toddler had just stepped off the sidewalk when the car slammed into him and left the scene.
Police also want to speak to the driver of a black four-door truck, after the driver stopped and spoke to the driver of the Beetle just after the accident. "The investigators believe that the driver that was driving the black, four-door truck knows who was driving that Beetle or can assist us in identifying if that person was a male, a female, what they looked like, and give us the clues we are looking for," said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Deanna Greenlaw.
Cruz was transported to Chris Evert Children's Hospital where he continues to recover. He suffered a skull fracture and swelling on the brain.
Police have recovered the Beetle from a Fort Lauderdale home, but what they still do not know is if the registered owner was driving the vehicle at the time. They are hoping the driver of the truck who followed the Beetle can give them the information they desperately need. "We are not sure what kind of communication transposed, but we know this person has information that could assist us in solving this incident," said Greenlaw.
If you have any information on the drivers of the red Beetle or the four-door truck, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
