Preschool receives new AC units after burglary
OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (WSVN) -- An Oakland Park daycare center received a generous donation after thieves stole their air conditioning units in May.
First Steps Just For Kids Preschool was one of about a dozen businesses in Oakland Park to be burglarized for the copper lining inside the AC units.
The preschool had three of its AC units swiped in early May, but Pride Air Conditioning from Pompano Beach donated and installed brand new units at the preschool on Tuesday.
Howard Pearl owner of Pride Conditioning said, "We felt terrible that the kids were in the heat and weren't able to do school stuff, and the owners couldn't afford to get the school back up and running, and we're in a position to do it."
The school will also be receiving custom-made cages that will be put over the units. The cages will prevent thieves from ripping off the units.
Joanna Bellamy, an employee at the preschool, said, "It was a relief to know that we still have people that care."
The AC units that were taken from First Steps Preschool were worth about $5,000 to $6,000.
Cops arrested and locked up four of the AC bandits and charged them with at least three of the crimes.
The crooks caused about $30,000 in damage to several Oakland Park businesses for copper that was only worth about $1,000.
As for the kids, they can soon say goodbye to a hot sticky classroom and hello to cool air.
