18 hospitalized after 3 boats collide
SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- An accident involving two boats sent 18 people to the hospital, one of them with serious injuries, Sunday.
A witness said he saw rescue crews bringing in some of the victims to Black Point Marina, located at 24775 Southwest 87th Avenue. "Well, we were here, and we saw the first lady, she had a [neck] brace on," said Angel Martinez. "The second one didn't have a brace [on], but she was on a stretcher, and they had two kids. They were all right."
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said the accident took place around 6:30 p.m. near Elliott Key. The vessels were returning back into dock when, according to FWC spokesman Jorge Pino, "They collided. We don't know exactly why they crashed, but there was a pretty violent collision, enough that it sent one person to the hospital via helicopter."
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews and the U.S. Coast Guard quickly arrived on the scene. FWC officials said one person was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital and 17 others were treated for minor to moderate injuries. "The Coast Guard brought them in," said Martinez. "They were going in real fast."
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident.
