2 fatally struck by out-of-control driver
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police said a bicyclist and a homeless man have been killed by a driver who lost control of her vehicle.
"I noticed the car right away because it was going so fast, and out of no where it just swung a left, and they just ended up going straight through the bushes and running over one guy and running over another guy," said Byron Campbell who witnessed the tragic accident.
The fatal accident happened around 2:15 a.m. Thursday morning at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and Southwest Fifth Avenue, near Downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Investigators said the 22-year-old driver of a Porsche was traveling west on Broward Boulevard and she tried to make a left turn onto Northwest Fifth Avenue. Police said she never made the turn and jumped the curb, plowed through some bushes, hit one man and then hit another man, who according to witnesses was dragged under her car.
Witnesses said the driver tried to take off but the wheels kept spinning and the car would not move. "This guy was wrapped around the front of the car and she was smoking the tires, trying to get away. I'm looking at her and she runs out and jumps out and she leaves, and she comes over here and sits on the curb," said Mike Lacey.
One man said he knew one of the victims and witnessed the accident. "For some reason it was hard for her to get away with a friend of mine wrapped around her front wheel," he said. "It was smoking some tires a bit, trying to get away and figured out she couldn't go anywhere and just stopped," said Michael.
Campbell said the crash happened so fast that one of the victims didn't have time to react. "The first one I know definitely didn't see it coming, he was sitting with his back to the street so I know he didn't see it coming, which is probably a good thing," he said.
Detectives said the female driver may have been driving under the influence. "There was a search warrant to obtain a blood draw on the driver," said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Deanna Greenlaw.
She was taken into custody but has since been released. Possible charges are pending.
