Pedestrian struck, killed by BSO deputy
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Broward Sheriff's Office said Helen Adams was trying to cross the street when she was fatally struck by BSO deputy Jeffrey Bates early Wednesday morning.
BSO said Adams had just left Broward Health Imperial Point with her boyfriend when she was struck near North Federal Highway and Northeast 62nd Street.
Adams had just been dropped off at Imperial Point the night prior to the accident by her close friend Jerry Sweet.
"That's just too bad," Sweet said. "I'm sick. I took her to Imperial Point, she needed that hospital treatment last night because she was complaing of heart problems."
Paramedics transported Adams to Broward North Medical Center where doctors pronounced her dead just 30 minutes later.
"BSO Traffic Homicide investigators spent the morning trying to determine exactly what happened that led to this crash and the woman's death," said BSO Spokesperson Dani Moschella.
BSO said Bates has returned to his normal shift.
"The deputy will return to work for his normal shift unless a supervisor will determine that's not appropriate for some reason," said Moschella. "But it's not like a deputy-involved shooting where there is an automatic leave. That doesn't happen in this case."
Adam's boyfriend and Bates were not injured.
Adam's did have a history of drugs and alcohol. It is unknown if she was under the influence at the time of the incident.
The accident remains under investigation.
