Girls home alone during break-in call 911, police arrest crooks
HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A young girl made a courageous call to police after two men broke into her South Florida home while she was home alone with her sister.
Johnnatan Moreno and John Serna were arrested after, police said, they confessed to breaking into a home while the two young girls hid inside hiding a bathroom.
Dispatcher: "Listen to me, where are you now?"
Girl: "I'm in the bathroom."
Dispatcher: "In the bathroom?"
According to Hialeah Police, around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Moreno and Serna knocked on the front door of a home located on West 53rd Street in Hialeah. When no one answered, they broke into the home through a window.
The 10-year-old and her 13-year-old sister immediately called their dad, hid in the bathroom and called 911. The girl's father also called police.
Dad: "They're breaking in, and my daughters are home alone."
Dispatcher: "OK, is she inside the house?"
Dad: "Yes, they're both inside the house."
Dispatcher: "You're still locked in the bathroom with your sister, correct?"
Girl: "Oh, my God."
Dispatcher: "OK, listen to me, calm down. I already have help en route."
Several minutes later, Hialeah Police arrived on the scene and arrested the pair.
Police said the girls did everything right. "It's like it would have been rehearsed," said Hialeah Police Department Detective Carl Zogby. They found a safe place in the house. They hid in there. They locked themselves in the bathroom. They immediately dialed 911."
Police said it wasn't the first time Moreno and Serna have broken into a home. An hour earlier, the pair burglarized a home on 53rd Street. One of them went inside the home through the window and left after coming face-to-face with a disabled occupant.
Zogby believes the pair might be responsible for other burglaries in the area. "We don't think this is the first time they've hit Hialeah. Like I've said, we've had plenty of burglaries recently with the same MO," said Zogby.
Both men are now being held on a $37,000 bond.
