Police: Man killed over cell phone
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Miami Police are searching for one of two teenagers who, they said, killed a 54-year-old man for his cell phone. The second subject was arrested and appeared in juvenile court Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, around 11:30 p.m. Monday, Jerry Sherrell was walking home in the area of 282 NE 54th St. when two teenagers on bicycles approached him.
Authorities said the teens targeted Sherrell to acquire the cell phone in his pocket. "They demanded his cell phone while the second subject, who is still at large, pointed a hidden gun at him," said Miami Police Detective Willie Moreno.
When Sherrell refused, police said the subject holding the firearm fired at the victim point blank several times. The teens then fled the scene. Miami Police caught up with one of the subjects, 16-year-old Gregory Cooper, a few blocks from the murder scene.
"Now he's in jail for murder, 16 years old," said Joann Baker, Cooper's neighbor. "That hurt me so bad, to see that he went to jail for murder and robbery. They need something for these kids out here to do."
Police said Cooper was the one who demanded Sherrell's cell phone. The subject who remains at large, they said, was the one who pulled the trigger. Investigators said he is armed and dangerous.
"Basically, they were looking to make quick money," said Moreno. "They stole this person's cell phone in hopes of reselling it and getting money to buy clothing. That's something very sad to see, the value of life. Life is too precious. You can always replace your property. Do not fight. Hand it over."
Cooper is being charged with first degree murder. State officials said they are intent to prosecute him as an adult. He will remain in secured detention until his next court hearing, which is tentatively scheduled for July 22.
If you have any information on the whereabouts of the subject at large or the fatal shooting, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
